Bathroom Design Mistakes That Are Easy to Avoid (If You Catch Them Early)

By Nephi Barlow · September 6, 2026

A bathroom is a small room, which means small mistakes show up big. Here’s what tends to go wrong, and how to catch it early.

Skipping ventilation planning

A bathroom without proper ventilation stays humid long after the shower’s off, and that moisture works its way into paint, grout, and eventually drywall.

This is one of the easiest things to get right during a remodel and one of the most expensive to fix afterward. If ventilation isn’t part of the conversation with your contractor, bring it up.

Choosing style before durability

A tile or finish that looks great in a showroom doesn’t always hold up in a room that deals with constant moisture and temperature swings.

Ask specifically how a material performs in wet conditions before committing to it, not just how it looks.

Underestimating how little storage is enough

Bathrooms fill up fast. A design that looks clean and minimal on paper can feel cramped within a few months if storage wasn’t planned around how the space actually gets used day to day.

Think through what needs to live in the room permanently before finalizing the layout.

Not planning for the in-between days

A full bathroom remodel usually means that bathroom is out of service for a stretch. If it’s your only bathroom, that’s worth planning around, whether that means a temporary setup or a clear schedule you can plan your week around.

Assuming waterproofing is automatic

Waterproofing behind tile and around fixtures isn’t optional, but it’s not always visible in a quote either.

Ask directly what waterproofing method is being used and where. It’s the kind of thing that only becomes obvious once it’s missing.
